Spain is a country of great sailors, who range from the discovery of America to the first round the world. Sailing is one of the sports that has given Spain the most success. With 19 Olympic medals, it is the most awarded sport in the country with 13 gold, 5 silver and 1 bronze. Spain adds four challenges to the Americas ’Cup and has competed in eight editions of the round-the-world stage: Whitbread Volvo Ocean Race. It also features solo ocean sailors. Spain has hosted major events such as the America’s Cup in Valencia, the Volvo Ocean Race in Vigo and Alicante and the Barcelona World Race. The union of contrasted and young sailors has made Spain one of the main powers in the world for four decades, with sailors who stand out in all categories, which means that the future is assured. Team Spain wants to continue making history and aspire to win the SSL, the first world championship of nations.

LUIS DORESTE

The SSL Team Spain captain made history by being the first Spanish athlete to win two Olympic gold medals. He was the sports director of Desafío Español, a union that participated in the 2007 America’s Cup in Valencia, previously he had been the tactician of Bravo España in the 2000 AC in Auckland. He has a long family tradition in the Olympics, as his brother José Luis won gold at Finn at Seoul 88 ‘. World and European champion in different classes such as Europe, FD, 470 and Soling. Currently, he continues sailing on cruises in the main regattas, being one of the most sought-after tacticians in the world.

ROBERTO ‘CHUNY’ BERMÚDEZ DE CASTRO

He is the most successful Spanish sailor in ocean sailing. Winner of the Volvo Ocean Race with the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing Team (2014-2015) acting as one of the chief watchmen. He has participated in a total of seven tours of the world. He competed in the Star class at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games and has been part of two Spanish challenges to the America’s Cup.

 

TÁMARA ECHEGOYEN

She has participated in three Summer Olympic Games, winning a gold medal in London 2012, in the Elliott 6m class (along with Sofia Toro and Angela Pumariega), fourth place in Rio de Janeiro 2016, and fourth place in Tokyo 2020, in the 49er FX class.
She has won a 2013 World Match Racing Championship gold medal, three 49er World Championship gold medals from 2016-2022, a 2011 Elliott 6m European Championship gold medal, and a bronze at the 2016 49er European Championship.

 

CARLOS HERNÁNDEZ

He is one of the values ​​of Spanish ocean sailing. He was one of the discoveries through the RC44 class. He was one of the under 30s in the 2014/15 Volvo Ocean Race. He is currently part of the crew of the multihull Maserati, in which he has achieved several records.
