We waited with bated breath for hours to watch the Medal Race of the 2024 470 World Championships. However, there was no medal race due to stormy conditions which included gusts of 30 knots and three metre breaking waves in the bay of Palma. This meant that the Spanish team of Jordi Xammar and Nora Brugman were crowned the 2024 470 World Champions.

Runner-up at the previous two Worlds, Brugman was delighted and relieved to have brought the title home, especially as convincingly as the team did with an 11 point lead over second place.

The Royal Yachting Association had sent their 470 Olympic Squad with the hopes of securing the only European slot available at this event for the Olympics this summer. The squad really performed this week and ultimately walked away with the Nations Cup which is based on the best two results from each country. Heathcote and Grube were second on the podium and were supported by training partners Martin Wrigley and Bettine Harris in 9th place.

Where does that leave us with regards to the Summer Olympics in a couple of months? Angola’s Manuela Paulo and Matias Montinho beat the Mozambican team for the African slot. Great Britain’s Heathcote and Grube secured the European slot. Unfortunately for the Brazilian Team, they managed to qualify their country for the games but did not meet their federation’s requirement of a finish in the top 16 and finished in 27th place overall.
