He started sailing in the Optimist class when he was 8 years old, but an illness kept him away from sailing until he was 18, when he began to achieve important sporting success in the Snipe class, in which he won the European championship in 1998, was Spanish champion five times, in 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2004, and in 1999 he came fourth in the world championship. He also won the Spanish Cup four times, in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000.
